Health coaching is a collaborative relationship between a client and a health coach. They work together to discuss health concerns and overcome barriers. With the coach guiding and supporting the client, they work towards creating and achieving goals to improve the client’s health in whatever ways are important to the them.
Health coaching is more of a collaborative relationship. When working with a therapist, nutritionist, dietitian, or personal trainer, the client is usually given specific instructions to follow and is told what to do. When working with a health coach, the client is in the driver’s seat and the coach is in the passenger’s seat. The health coach many offer some advice or guidance based on the client’s preference. The biggest difference is that the client will be the expert of their own health and the one who is creating their own goals based on what fits with their lifestyle instead of being given a specific plan to follow.
Yes! There are many types of health coaches. Health coaches may be general lifestyle health coaches, or they may be specialized based on their additional certifications and experiences. Health coaches often have a background in other roles such as a nurse, dietitian, physical therapist, personal trainer, or a nutritionist. This allows the health coach to apply their additional knowledge, expertise, and skills while working as a health coach.
Unfortunately, health coaching is not covered by health insurance at this time. Hopefully that will change! Clients do have the option to use a flexible spending account (FSA) or a health savings account (HSA) to pay for coaching.
